Travel advisory for Brazil remains at level 2 warning

The US State Department has updated recommendations for tourists Brazilsupporting the country on Level 2 and urging visitors to exercise increased caution due to the risks of crime and kidnapping.

The update, issued on August 31, 2026, revised the advisory summary but did not change Brazil’s risk level or existing crime and kidnapping rates. Level 2 recommends extra caution rather than avoiding the country entirely.

Violent crimes, including armed robberies, murders and car thefts, could occur day and night in Brazilian cities, officials warn. Express kidnappings also remain a concern, with victims sometimes forced to withdraw cash or transfer money through banking apps such as Pix.

The guidelines highlight cases where criminals use dating apps or approach people in bars before drugging them. Incidents involving substances placed in drinks are considered particularly common in Rio de Janeiro.

Safety Tips for Visitors

The State Department advises visitors not to walk on beaches after dark and not to visit bars and nightclubs alone. He also recommends keeping drinks under supervision, taking extra care at night and avoiding physical resistance during a robbery.
