The Great Pyramid kept its secrets behind millions of tons of stone, but a new newspaper claims its greatest message may have been hiding in plain sight. It is said that the supposed code is not carved into the wall, but is built into the height, base, slanted sides and overall shape of the pyramid. Levy argued that these measurements were strikingly consistent with the cycles of the moon, the calendar, and the planets visible to the naked eye. He believes that these numbers were intended to forever preserve the Egyptians’ knowledge of mathematics, time and the heavens. “The pyramid was not built to last because there was something valuable in it,” Levy wrote. “It was built to last forever because it was something valuable.” The article, published in August, concluded with its boldest statement: “The pyramid is not a repository of knowledge. The empty granite sarcophagus, funerary complex, and royal cemetery support this feature, but do not prove that Khufu was buried there. No ancient text states that its dimensions encode astronomy. To uncover the supposed pattern, Levi studied the pyramid’s basic dimensions and divided them using fractions used by ancient Egyptian scribes. According to the article, the answers repeatedly come close to numbers important in mathematics and astronomy. One simple calculation gives 27.5, which almost corresponds to the interval of about 27.55 days between successive lunar perigees, when the Moon reaches its closest point to the Earth. Another gives exactly 70, which Levy associated with the approximately 70-day interval between the heliacal setting and the rising of Sirius, when it was hidden by sunlight. The theory suggests that the builders turned the pyramid into an eternal stone record of their understanding of time, space and the heavens. To test whether similar patterns would arise by chance, Levy created 100,000 hypothetical Old Kingdom-style pyramids. These were not complete structures: the program varied the width of their bases from 75 to 440 royal cubits and slopes along the ancient ridge. The same test was applied to each model, and Levy reported that 2,419 models (about 2.4 percent) scored as many matches as the Great Pyramid, or more. He argued that this made the coincidence less likely, but this remains his own simulation rather than independent confirmation. One more rigorous comparison was inconclusive. Levy suggested that the Great Pyramid was built to represent ancient Egyptian tradition. It says that the first earth arose from the water world. The tradition that the first earth emerged from a chaotic, dark, watery world is known as the Heliopolitan creation myth, centered around a primeval mound called the benben. He believes that the pyramid was built to represent the original mound from which creation began. Levi then made a much more controversial claim, suggesting that the story may have been based on a real place where some distant ancestors of the Egyptians may have lived. His candidate is the Eye of the Sahara, a huge ring-shaped formation in Mauritania with a hill at the center. Thousands of years ago, when the Sahara was greener and wetter, it may have been surrounded by water. The theory suggests that the communities abandoned the region as the region dried out and eventually traveled east to the Nile, taking with them the memories of their old home. Levi believes that subsequent generations recreated this memory at Giza. The pyramid was a hill, and the harbor and lost branch of the Nile placed water at the edge of the complex. He interprets the roads leading west as symbolically connecting the setting sun, the dead, and the supposed homeland of the ancestors. In other words, Levy argues that the Great Pyramid preserved the story of where some of Egypt’s distant ancestors may have come from. There is no direct evidence linking the Eye of the Sahara to Giza or proving that this journey occurred.
