Skål Bangkok Urges Nationwide Fire Safety Review After Tragedy
Skål International Bangkok has called for a nationwide review of fire safety standards following the deadly Bangkok entertainment venue fire. The organization is urging stronger enforcement, regular inspections, and improved emergency preparedness to protect lives, strengthen public confidence, and safeguard Thailand’s reputation as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations.
Skål International Bangkok has called for a comprehensive nationwide review of fire safety standards at entertainment venues following the devastating Bangkok entertainment venue fire that claimed at least 30 lives. The organization has also expressed its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost loved ones, while urging stronger enforcement of existing fire safety regulations, more rigorous inspections, and greater accountability across Thailand’s hospitality and entertainment sectors to help ensure such a tragedy is never repeated.
The fire has shocked Thailand and the international tourism community, once again highlighting the critical importance of maintaining the highest safety standards in bars, pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and entertainment venues throughout the Kingdom.
Thailand welcomes tens of millions of domestic and international visitors each year and has built a global reputation as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations. Its vibrant nightlife, renowned hospitality, and welcoming atmosphere are among its greatest attractions. Preserving that reputation depends not only on exceptional service but also on ensuring that visitors, employees, and local residents can enjoy entertainment venues in complete safety.
Public confidence is one of tourism’s most valuable assets. Every visitor has the right to expect that an evening out will end with a safe journey home. Protecting that confidence is a shared responsibility between venue operators, government authorities, regulators and the wider tourism industry.
While the cause of the latest fire remains under official investigation, the tragedy has renewed concerns about the consistent enforcement of fire safety regulations, building standards, emergency preparedness and venue licensing throughout the country.
Sadly, Thailand has experienced similar tragedies before.
Many will remember the Santika Nightclub fire in Bangkok during the 2009 New Year celebrations, which claimed more than 60 lives and injured over 200 others. The disaster prompted significant public debate and led to reforms covering licensing, occupancy limits and fire safety compliance.
More recently, the Mountain B Pub fire in Chonburi in 2022 claimed 26 lives and injured dozens more. Investigations revealed multiple safety failures, including inadequate emergency exits and breaches of building regulations. The incident again prompted calls for tougher enforcement and more frequent inspections.
Despite these lessons, the latest tragedy demonstrates that significant gaps remain and that ongoing vigilance is essential.

Skål International Bangkok believes this latest incident must become a turning point—not simply another tragedy that prompts temporary attention before reforms lose momentum.
The organization joins the Pattaya Nightlife Business Association in supporting stronger enforcement of fire safety regulations nationwide. Association President Lisa Hamilton has stressed that fires resulting in the loss of life at entertainment venues should never happen again. Skål International Bangkok believes this position deserves the full support of everyone connected with Thailand’s tourism and hospitality industries.
The Association is calling upon the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Pattaya City, provincial administrations, and all relevant government agencies to strengthen inspection programs and ensure consistent enforcement of life-safety regulations across all entertainment venues throughout Thailand.
Among the measures requiring immediate attention are:
- Regular unannounced inspections of entertainment venues during operating hours.
- Strict enforcement to ensure all emergency exits remain unlocked, unobstructed, clearly marked and fully operational.
- Routine inspection, testing and certification of fire alarms, emergency lighting, sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers.
- Independent inspection and certification of electrical installations, wiring and air-conditioning systems.
- Mandatory staff training in emergency evacuation procedures, supported by regular fire drills.
- Careful monitoring of occupancy levels to prevent overcrowding.
- Greater scrutiny of venues operating under licences that may not accurately reflect their actual use.
- Strong penalties, including immediate closure where necessary, for establishments failing to comply with life-safety regulations.
Skål International Bangkok also encourages venue operators to view safety not merely as a regulatory requirement but as an essential investment in their guests, employees, reputation and long-term commercial success.
Visitors can also contribute to their own safety by taking a few moments to identify emergency exits upon entering crowded venues and by reporting any obvious safety concerns to venue management.
