The Cats of Greece: Exploring the Country One Cat at a Time
Since it was my first time in Greece, I had no idea the country was flocked with cute felines. Everywhere I went, I could find them scurrying in nooks and corners and gawking at this tourist with interest. I just knew I had to write a photoblog as an ode to the cats of Greece.
Why are there so many Cats in Greece?
I had to read up about this because I was curious. I have never seen so many stray cats in any country prior to this.
My research led me to believe that there are over 3 million stray cats in Greece, all because of the ideal climate, plenty of food supply, and historical lack of neutering.
In touristy spots, the strays get plenty of love and food from tourists, and in other places like fish markets and taverns, tons of leftovers. Greeks love these kitties and often keep food and water outside, and communal feeding is prevalent.
The cats are considered as a symbol of prosperity and good luck.

Initially, I was taking a few cat photos here and there to send to my mom back in India. She is a big lover of felines, and I knew these pictures would brighten her day.
Somewhere along the trip, I decided to share the photos with my readers because who doesn’t like a cute cat photo, right?

Cats of Lefkada
My first stop in Greece was the stunning Ionian island of Lefkada.
In Lefkada town I didn’t take any cat photos but in Vasiliki, I went all goo goo ga ga over these furries and started my cat obsession.
Cats of Kefalonia
When we got to Kefalonia, Argostoli was our first stop. We were so surprised to see the cutest little kitty litter in an abandoned house just opposite us. This gave us an excuse to sit in the verandah and exchange inquisitive looks with the litter.
We saw plenty more whilst walking around and dining in town.
And of course there were cat souvenirs everywhere.
We met some cats in Lassi too as we decided to spend a few days in this beach resort destination of Kefalonia.
Tips for Photographing Cats in Greece
If you wish to take photos of cats in Greece (or any other animal anywhere in the world), just keep basic animal photography tips in mind.
Be mindful of their space and don’t push the camera into their face. Keep distance, give them a treat, pet them if they are friendly and walk away.
Cats are elusive creatures by nature, so don’t make any fast moves or they will scurry away. Get low on the ground by squatting, so they don’t feel a towering shadow as that can be scary.
