5 Airline Loyalty Programs That Will Still Have Real Value in 2026

While there are some airline loyalty programs worth switching to in 2026, many of them aren’t what they were years ago. Rewards tables have given way to dynamic pricing, elite status increasingly rewards spending, and some of the simplest perks now require a credit card or a long flight.

However, in 2026, several large loyalty programs in the US still offer benefits that can make a real difference. These benefits can range from earning points based on distance, keeping rewards valid, getting useful perks without reaching top tier status, or even unlocking elite benefits through everyday spending. The cost also largely depends on how and where the passenger travels. A program that works great for frequent domestic fliers may be much less useful for those focused on international travel.

These five programs from some of the highest-rated airlines in the United States stand out for different reasons. Alaska Airlines’ Atmos Rewards leads the way with flexible earnings and access to global partners, while Southwest, JetBlue, American Airlines and United Airlines offer their own compelling reasons to stay loyal.

Alaska Airlines offers America’s best airline loyalty program that differs from most major carriers by giving travelers the opportunity to earn Atmos Rewards points based on distance traveled. In 2025, Alaska announced that members would eventually be able to choose to earn one point per mile traveled, five points per dollar spent, or 500 points per flight segment. However, this choice-based system has not yet launched and is scheduled to launch “later in 2026.” For travelers who regularly take long-haul flights at relatively inexpensive fares, the long-haul option should be especially valuable upon arrival.

The program also remains competitive when it comes to redemption costs. NerdWallet’s 2026 analysis estimates Atmos points are worth about 1.4 cents each, although the actual value varies depending on the reward and destination.

Elite status is now based on status points rather than the old EQM system. Atmos Silver status requires 20,000 status points and includes benefits such as free upgrades to First and Premium Class (subject to availability), one free checked bag, preferred seat and bonus points on eligible flights.

This combination makes Atmos attractive to travelers who want to earn money remotely without giving up access to a large international affiliate network. In an article that questions whether the Atmos loyalty program is worth it, members can redeem points with oneworld’s Alaska and global partners, with the program serving more than 1,000 destinations worldwide.

Rapid Rewards Southwest Airlines

Southwest Rapid Rewards remains one of easier to understand airline loyalty programs. Points never expire, there are no blackout dates on award flights, and members can redeem points for any available seat on Southwest. This simplicity is valuable for travelers who prefer simple rewards to complex reward tables.

The biggest benefit of the program is the Companion Pass. The pass is available to members who have accumulated 135,000 qualifying points or completed 100 one-way qualifying flights in a calendar year. He allows his designated companion to fly with him for as long as the pass is valid and only pays applicable taxes and fees. The pass is valid for the remainder of the year in which it is earned and for the entirety of the following calendar year, potentially making it one of the most valuable benefits for couples and families who travel frequently.

Rapid Rewards also maintains practical savings, although Southwest’s famous “two free bags” policy is no longer universal. In 2026, two checked bags will be free on Choice Extra and A-List Preferred members, and A-List members and eligible Rapid Rewards credit card members will receive one free checked bag. Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred fares generally include a checked baggage fee.

For domestic travelers, especially families and frequent flyers to Southwest, the combination of flexible rewards and the Companion Pass continues to give Rapid Rewards a strong value proposition.

JetBlue Airways TrueBlue

JetBlue TrueBlue offers significant benefits even before members reach elite status, which is not the norm for many airline loyalty programs. Members earn one tile for every $100 in qualifying JetBlue flight spend, JetBlue vacation spend and TrueBlue travel spend, or one tile for every $1,000 spent on JetBlue credit cards.

For just 10 tiles, members can select their first Perks You Pick reward. Options include boarding in Group B at qualifying fares, priority security when available, a free alcoholic beverage for members 21 and older, a JetBlue Vacations bonus or 5,000 TrueBlue points. Additional perks can be selected when you have 20, 30, or 40 tiles. Collecting 50 tiles will unlock Mosaic 1 with benefits such as free checked baggage, priority security, Mosaic boarding, same-day ticket change, and free seat benefits subject to applicable conditions.

TrueBlue also allows members to combine points through point pooling, with the total number of members limited to seven. This structure makes it easier for groups to accumulate enough points to earn rewards and helps make TrueBlue a value proposition for East Coast and transcontinental travelers.

American Airlines

American Airlines’ AAdvantage program remains one of the most flexible ways to earn airline elite status without relying on flying. Members can earn Loyalty Points by participating in qualifying activities with American stores, restaurants, hotels, rental car locations and other partners, and by making eligible AAdvantage Credit Card spends. This makes the status achievable for travelers whose day-to-day expenses go beyond airfare.

AAdvantage Gold requires 40,000 loyalty points during the qualifying year, while higher levels require 75,000 for Platinum, 125,000 for Platinum Pro and 200,000 for Executive Platinum. The qualifying year runs from March 1st to the end of February.

In addition to allowing participants to enjoy free Wi-Fi (a perk introduced in 2026), the program also gives participants incentives along the way. Once they reach 15,000 loyalty points, members can choose rewards including Group 5 boarding, preferred seat coupons and other options, well before Gold status automatically kicks in when they reach 40,000. Once they reach 60,000 loyalty points, members unlock a separate rewards tier that includes a limited-time bonus of 25% on eligible spend with select partners.

Travelers can earn AAdvantage status without being a frequent flyer by using a credit card and participating in dining, hotel or shopping partner programs.

United Airlines MileagePlus

United Airlines MileagePlus remains beneficial for travelers who can take advantage of its extensive domestic network and Star Alliance partners. In 2026, earning Premier Silver status will require 15 Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) and 5,000 Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs), or just 6,000 PQPs.

Silver status still provides useful benefits once earned. Members receive free economy class access upon check-in for themselves and one companion, and one free checked bag in economy class. They also receive priority service and complimentary Premier upgrades on eligible flights, subject to availability.

MileagePlus eliminates a major headache for members by ensuring miles never expire due to inactivity, a permanent feature United introduced in 2019. Members no longer have to fly, shop, or use a co-branded credit card every 18 months just to protect their balance. This gives travelers the opportunity to accumulate miles over several years to use high-value international business class tickets.

United’s Star Alliance membership adds another layer of value by giving MileagePlus members access to award travel through an extensive global partner network. For travelers based at United hubs, this combination of domestic reach, international partners and meaningful Silver benefits can make it worth the effort to earn status.
