Buying a power tool is about choosing an ecosystem (and a battery pack). WIRED columnist Scott Gilbertson favors Milwaukee for its combination of reliability and value, and for large sales, Home Depot usually offers free battery packs or buy-one-get-one deals.

Home Depot Ryobi Landscaping & Tool Deals

Ryobi is a brand that former WIRED columnist Parker Hall consistently recommends for gardening and landscaping tools, largely because of their service philosophy. In many areas, including mine (the Pacific Northwest), Ryobi hires a local repair technician to come and fix your lawn mower or leaf blower instead of forcing you to send the machine to some repair center. It’s clutch even if you don’t have to use the service often.

Home Depot is offering its usual BOGO battery deals on Ryobi landscaping tools, including a powerful leaf blower ($159) that you’ll need sooner than you expect.

For entry-level tool sets, my colleague Kat Merk also recommends this amazingly inexpensive power tool starter set from Ryobi, which won’t be the envy of any jobsite but offers great value for the money and torque.
