Steven Gerrard questions Alexis McAllister’s ‘useless’ confession after the midfielder revealed he almost left Liverpool this summer and says the Reds NEED the Argentine star

Steven Gerrard has given his verdict on Alexis McAllister’s bombshell revelations about his future at Liverpool.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Reds’ Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister said he was “very sad” the club had not offered him a new contract.

The 27-year-old Argentine star watched his midfield colleagues Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch sign new contracts and insisted there was a chance he could leave in the summer.

And Liverpool legend Gerrard questioned the actions of the Argentine midfielder, although he emphasized how important he is for Andoni Iraola’s team.

“I’m a big fan of Alexis Mac Allister and I think he did very well for Liverpool,” he told TNT Sports. “He had a few injury problems last year and going into the World Cup you would have expected his focus to be elsewhere at certain points, which it was, but he’s a really smart player who has performed very well.”

“I think it (the new contract) will be the manager’s decision at the end of the day. The coach probably said to the guys around him, “Let me take a look at him, see how he plays, can he go back to his first season here when he came in, when he was amazing?”

Mac Allister has expressed his regret that the Reds have not offered him a new contract.

“If he can get this form consistently throughout the season then I think Liverpool will offer him a new contract and I really think Liverpool need him.”

Gerrard continued: “They need another (midfielder). They are easy so the last thing Liverpool need is to lose a player of Alex Mac Allister’s experience and quality, but last night’s moment for me I don’t think it helped.

“This is a case where he needs to knock on the coach’s door, talk privately and do it behind the scenes.”

When asked how close he was to leaving this summer, Mac Allister replied: “There was a chance.” As everyone knows, I received the news that the club cannot offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad.

“Because everyone can see that I give 100 percent to this football club every day. In training and games. I can have good and bad games like everyone else, but I always try my best.

“I see Dominic and Ryan renewing their contracts. It makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time I’m very sad that I didn’t get mine.

“Of course, there is still time, the fans have nothing to worry about because I will give 100 percent until the very last day that I am here. Let’s see what happens. There were options to leave this summer, but I think I’m at the right club now.”

Mac Allister, who turns 28 this year, has played 151 times for Liverpool since joining from Brighton in 2023 and has two years remaining on his contract.

He was extremely impressive in his first two seasons at the club, but struggled in the 2025–26 season as Liverpool’s form declined under Arne Slote.

Gerrard suggested Mac Allister should have raised his concerns privately with boss Andoni Iraola.

The midfielder admitted it was “possible” the situation could change, while former Reds star Steve McManaman said he would be surprised if the club did not offer Mac Allister a new contract.

“This shouldn’t have been said at the press conference,” he added on TNT Sports. “That was the only disappointing part, but I agree with Steven – they won’t let a player like him go at 27… we have plenty of time to talk about a new contract.”

“Let’s be honest, last year wasn’t his best year. He was great the year before when they won the league and maybe now is the time to talk, but last year he was disappointing.

“If it gets back to the level it was two years ago, I’ll be with Stephen – they need him and they need someone with his experience.” And he will be offered a new contract. You won’t let him go free and you won’t let him break the deal.”

Mac Allister scored the winner with a superb left-foot strike in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid and Gerrard praised his performance after the game.

“You let your football speak for you. I think he’s an outstanding player,” Gerrard said. “He got an early yellow card which could have affected them… but after the yellow card he took a stunning shot and played with composure and discipline, I think he is an outstanding player.”
