Virgin Reveals Astronaut – Cruise Maven

Virgin Voyages is turning a rare celestial event into an unforgettable cruise experience. Here’s what you need to know about their Solar Eclipse Voyages.

Virgin Voyages Launches Solar Eclipse Cruises for August 2026

Virgin Voyages has announced two special sailings built around a solar eclipse. These cruises are part of the brand’s Marvelous Collection. One ship will sail through northern Europe, and the other will cruise the Mediterranean.

Both sailings will feature NASA astronauts, astrophysicists, and space industry experts on board. This isn’t just a regular cruise with a cool view. Virgin Voyages is positioning these trips as once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

As Nathan Rosenberg, Virgin Voyages’ chief brand experience, marketing and momentum officer, put it: “Everyone else is selling cabins. We’re selling the two minutes the sky goes dark over the ocean, next to the people who’ve actually been up there.”

He added: “You can’t stream this. You can’t scroll it. You can’t A/B test wonders. You either show up, or you spend the next couple of years explaining why you didn’t.”

The Two Solar Eclipse Sailings

Solar Eclipse: Iceland & British Isles (Valiant Lady, Aug. 5–20)

This 15-night voyage departs from Portsmouth, England. The ship visits Dublin, Glasgow, Liverpool, and Belfast. It then heads to Iceland, stopping at Siglufjordur, Isafjordur, and Reykjavik before returning to Portsmouth. It also includes a stop in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Solar Eclipse: Barcelona to Rome (Scarlet Lady, Aug. 10–22)

This 12-night Mediterranean sailing starts in Barcelona. Guests will visit Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Cannes, and Ajaccio. The ship also stops at Tuscany/Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast before ending in Rome.

What’s Included in the Programming

Both cruises offer a full lineup of eclipse-themed events. Activities include expert talks, Q&A sessions, and shared eclipse viewing on deck. The programming covers everything from science to photography to wellness.

Onboard Events

Here are some of the highlights guests can expect on board:

  • Out of This World: Living in Orbit – NASA astronauts share what daily life is like in space.
  • Virgin Galactic: Ask an Astronaut – Will Whitehorn, who helped build Virgin’s commercial spaceflight program, joins Virgin Galactic astronauts for an open Q&A about leaving Earth’s atmosphere.
  • Solar Eclipse 101 – A solar physicist explains what happens during totality and how to watch it safely.
  • Eclipse Photography Masterclass – A photographer teaches guests how to capture the corona, Baily’s beads, and the diamond ring effect using just a smartphone.
  • Cosmic Pause: Eclipse Energy Session – A dharma teaching on light and shadow, followed by an energy session timed to the eclipse.
  • Designated Eclipse Watch Zones – Guests can choose to watch totality in complete silence, with a live musical score, or with real-time narration from an expert.

Shore Excursions (Shore Things)

Virgin Voyages also has eclipse-themed excursions at select ports:

  • Eclipse Countdown: Stars & Cider (Belfast, Northern Ireland) – Guests visit the Armagh Observatory, then enjoy a cider tasting at Long Meadow surrounded by orchards.
  • Mallorca Caves: Eclipse Countdown (Mallorca, Spain) – A guided tour through the Genova Caves, followed by a taste of local Mallorcan culture.
  • Eclipse Afterglow: Ibiza Sound & Soul (Ibiza, Spain) – Start with yoga in the Jardines de Palermo gardens, then wind down with a calming sound bath.
  • Eclipse Afterglow: Troll Peninsula Drive & Soak (Isafjordur, Iceland) – A scenic coastal drive past waterfalls and old fishing huts, ending with a dip in a geothermal pool.

A Cruise Experience Built Around the Sky

These sailings aren’t just about beautiful ports. They’re built around a single, powerful moment — the sky going dark in the middle of the ocean. Having real astronauts and space experts on board makes this a truly unique cruise experience. If space and science fascinate you, this could be the trip of a lifetime.
