JetBlue Ends JFK-Antigua Flights as Government Responds
The Government of Antigua and Barbuda says JetBlue’s decision to end nonstop JFK service after October 31, 2026, reflects broader airline network changes rather than destination-specific issues. Tourism officials say they will continue working with JetBlue while strengthening partnerships with other carriers serving the twin-island nation.
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda — The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has responded to JetBlue’s decision to remove nonstop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and V.C. Bird International Airport from its reservation system beyond October 31, 2026, stressing that the move is part of a broader restructuring by the airline rather than an issue unique to the destination.
The change comes as JetBlue continues a network optimization strategy that has seen the carrier reduce or discontinue a number of Caribbean and U.S. routes while reallocating aircraft to higher-priority markets, particularly Fort Lauderdale. Industry reports indicate the airline is reshaping its network under its “JetForward” strategy to improve profitability and aircraft utilization.
Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment Charles Fernandez said the government remains confident in the destination’s airlift strategy despite the development.
“While this development is disappointing, it is important to recognize that it is not unique to Antigua and Barbuda. Airlines worldwide are continually reviewing their networks and optimizing aircraft deployment in response to changing market conditions.”
Dean Fenton, Director of Tourism, USA for the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA), said the tourism authority will continue working closely with the airline while strengthening relationships with other carriers serving the destination.
“The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority will keep working with JetBlue to maximize connectivity through the airline’s hub network and help ensure our destination stays easily accessible to travellers. At the same time, we will keep collaborating with all of our airline partners to strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s airlift and protect our competitive edge in the North American market.”
According to aviation industry data, JetBlue has made similar adjustments elsewhere in the Caribbean in recent months, reducing service from New York (JFK) to Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, Montego Bay in Jamaica, and Puerto Plata and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic as part of broader efforts to optimize its network.
JetBlue first announced nonstop service between New York and Antigua in 2015, describing Antigua as one of the largest Caribbean markets it did not then serve and saying the route would strengthen its Caribbean leisure network.
Other Airlines Continue Serving Antigua and Barbuda
Despite JetBlue’s planned withdrawal of the nonstop JFK route after October 31, Antigua and Barbuda continues to enjoy service from several major international airlines, including:
- American Airlines — flights from Miami and Charlotte.
- Delta Air Lines — service from Atlanta and seasonal New York operations.
- United Airlines — service from Newark.
- Caribbean Airlines — regional connections through Trinidad and other Caribbean destinations.
- LIAT 20 — regional connectivity across the Eastern Caribbean.
- British Airways — scheduled flights from London Gatwick.
- Virgin Atlantic — service from London Heathrow.
- Air Canada — seasonal flights from Toronto and Montreal.
- WestJet — seasonal Canadian service.
- Sunwing Airlines — seasonal charter and leisure operations.
Tourism officials maintain that Antigua and Barbuda’s diverse mix of North American, Caribbean and European air services provides resilience even as individual airlines adjust their schedules.
