Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Sun has run into some technical trouble during its current Baltic Sea sailing — and it’s causing some significant changes to the trip.

What’s Happening With Norwegian Sun?

The Norwegian Sun is currently on a nine-night cruise through Northern Europe. The voyage departed Helsinki on June 24, 2026, with Copenhagen as its final destination.

The original itinerary included seven stops across Estonia, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany. But a technical issue has forced the ship to sail at reduced speeds, making it impossible to keep the original schedule.

Which Ports Were Cancelled?

Norwegian Cruise Line has already dropped three ports from the itinerary. Nynäshamn (Sweden), Klaipėda (Lithuania), and Gdynia (Poland) were all removed earlier in the voyage.

Now, there’s one more change. Kiel, Germany, has been cancelled too.

Why Was Kiel Dropped?

In a letter sent to guests onboard, Norwegian explained the situation clearly.

“Since our last update, our technicians have identified the required repair solution. To accommodate the time needed to support these efforts, we need to make one further adjustment to our itinerary,” the company wrote.

To make room for repairs, the ship will now stay overnight in Copenhagen for an extra evening. That extended stay replaced the planned Kiel stop.

Was Anything Added to the Itinerary?

Yes — there was one silver lining. The ship made an unplanned visit to Rønne, Denmark, on June 29, 2026. That port wasn’t on the original schedule, so it was a bonus stop for passengers.

Following a stop in Warnemünde, Germany, the Norwegian Sun is set to dock in Copenhagen for three days starting July 1, 2026.

What Compensation Are Passengers Getting?

Norwegian Cruise Line is offering a pretty generous compensation package to affected guests. Here’s what passengers will receive:

  • 25% refund on the cruise fare paid
  • $100 non-refundable onboard credit per stateroom
  • Complimentary basic internet access
  • 25% Future Cruise Credit for each guest

“This is in addition to the $100 non-refundable onboard credit per stateroom, complimentary basic internet access and the 25 percent Future Cruise Credit for each guest that was previously communicated,” Norwegian noted in its letter to guests.

Any shore excursions booked through Norwegian for the Kiel stop have been automatically cancelled. Guests will receive a full refund back to their accounts.

A Note From Norwegian

Despite the disruptions, Norwegian has tried to keep passengers informed and taken care of throughout the journey.

“We sincerely appreciate the flexibility, patience and understanding you have shown throughout this voyage; we remain committed to making the remainder of your journey as enjoyable and memorable as possible,” the cruise line told guests.

Technical issues at sea are never fun — especially when you’ve been looking forward to certain ports. But Norwegian’s quick communication and solid compensation package show they’re taking the situation seriously.
