Newcastle warn fans more players will be sold as Manchester United monitor Lewis Hall transfer

Newcastle sanctioned the sale of some of their biggest names in the summer transfer window and fans have now been told to prepare for more high-profile departures in the future.

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson has admitted that sales of big-name players are likely as the club adopts a new model for exchanging players to ensure they remain within financial rules.

The Magpies lost Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães during the summer transfer window, while Alexander Isak was sold for a UK record transfer fee 12 months ago after campaigning for a move to Liverpool.

Some £230m was generated from player sales during the transfer window, with Newcastle attracting an influx of young talent, including the deadline day capture of Matias Fernandez-Pardo.

But while Newcastle may not be under immediate financial pressure, Wilson has warned supporters that further player swaps are inevitable in order to continue to comply with both the Premier League and UEFA financial rules.

“These are the kinds of conversations every club should be having,” Wilson told The Telegraph.

“We’re working on a regulatory framework that’s not for Newcastle United. It’s for everyone. So it’s not a choice. It’s what we have to do. And if you don’t do it, you’ll just keep the team you have forever. They’ll grow old, achieve less and be wasted.”

“If you want to be a successful club in the Premier League you will have to trade players and if you don’t do that you probably won’t be a successful club.

“Especially where the income of this club is at a stage where [chief executive] David [Hopkinson] and his team is actually increasing those revenues. But without that, if you don’t trade players, you’ll be stuck.”

Lewis Hall was another high-profile player who was the subject of transfer interest in the summer, with Manchester United courting the 22-year-old left-back.

Newcastle are attempting to negotiate a new contract for Hall with the player still at St James’ Park after the window, with the same outlet reporting the former Chelsea man is “expected” to sign new terms.

However, this does not appear to have deterred United from planning to sign Hall in the future, with reports suggesting the defender will remain a key transfer target.
