AAA Apple unveiled its latest generation of iPhone, including the widely anticipated foldable version called Duo. The company’s new chief executive John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on September 1, unveiled the latest lineup at the Steve Jobs Theater on Wednesday (US time). New Apple iPhone Duo.YouTube/Apple After reviewing other updates to the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, as well as advances in artificial intelligence, Ternus told the audience that “there’s actually one more thing,” a reference to Jobs’ signature catchphrase, which Jobs himself borrowed from the 1970s detective show “Columbo.” The phone, called Duo, has “the largest display ever on an iPhone and yet fits in your pocket,” Ternus said. The phone reveals a 7.6-inch display that is 80 percent larger than the latest iPhone 18 Pro. It will allow people to use Apple Pencil on their phone, a feature previously only available to iPad users. Duo, according to Ternus, will “redefine the foldable phone experience.” Duo also allows users to split the screen to use two different apps on the device, or two windows of the same website, for example to compare shopping. They will start at AU$2,099 and AU$2,299 respectively. The Duo starts at AU$3,499. Customers will be able to pre-order the phones starting September 12 and they will be available on September 18, while the Duo will go on sale on October 23. The new models feature longer battery life—45 hours of video playback for the Pro Max—and faster charging. The camera offers what Apple calls “cinematic effects” based on regular video shot on the phone, as well as new manual control capabilities and “smart focus tracking” that allows users to focus on a single moving subject, such as a child during a football game. Apple is also focusing on Siri’s new AI capabilities in new phones, with a focus on privacy and security to differentiate itself from rivals that are further ahead with AI. Many of Apple’s biggest competitors, such as Samsung, Motorola and Google, have already launched foldable smartphones. But Apple is not one to rush with new technologies. The test of Apple’s ambitions will be whether it can expand this niche into a meaningful new segment.” Earlier this year, Apple unveiled advances in artificial intelligence, including updates to its Siri assistant, highlighting a focus on privacy and everyday use as the company tries to catch up with rivals in artificial intelligence. Chatterjee said Ternus’ keynote speech at the tech giant’s Cupertino, California, headquarters will set the tone for his vision for Apple’s future. “John Ternus inherits perhaps the most successful consumer technology giant of our time. This is both a blessing and a burden for him. Tim Cook’s excellence in execution, scale and monetization has set the bar high, and Ternus must expand on that,” Chatterjee said. “But it must maintain that momentum by positioning Apple to lead a revolution in the near future, when the iPhone, or any other smartphone for that matter, is no longer the consumer’s primary connection to the world.” Last year’s iPhone 17 lineup, which included a new ultra-thin model, sold well.
