Central Kentucky residents had a great Labor Day celebration

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Thousands of Americans are traveling this Labor Day, with increased traffic seen even before the holiday. AAA says travelers may face higher costs for gas, airfare and hotels. That hasn’t stopped Central Kentucky residents from making short trips.

Grayson Campbell lives in Versailles and had to drive through Lexington before reaching her final destination.

“We’re going to Kings Island with my colleagues,” Campbell said.

Campbell said she saw a lot more traffic than usual on Sunday, but that didn’t stop her from looking forward to the rollercoaster ride.

“We’re going to be riding in the back of a minivan. So I’m really excited,” Campbell said.

Gas prices are higher than last year

AAA reports that gas prices are expected to be higher this Labor Day compared to last year. The average price in Kentucky in 2025 was $2.92 per gallon. It is now $3.83.

“We’re going to go to Somerset, go to the local track where we practice and get ready for the race next weekend,” said Drew Rincón, who lives in Lexington.

Rincon and his 16-year-old son, Wyatt, are no strangers to Lexington traffic. Drew said this weekend was different.

“It probably took about 15 extra minutes to get home compared to the normal 15 minute drive, and the drive home takes about 30 to 45 minutes,” Drew Rincón said.

Wyatt Rincón has advice for vacation drivers.

“Be safe and have fun,” Wyatt Rincón said.

Kentucky State Police are conducting Operation CARE today with additional patrols on highways, interstates and other roadways.
