A huge waterspout hit a tourist boat off the coast of Italy as deadly floods and storms hit the country.

Dramatic footage showed a towering vortex swirling over the sea off San Michele di Pagana, near Rapallo in northern Italy, on Thursday morning.

The man can be heard repeatedly shouting “no, no, no, no” as the twister appears to be heading towards a tour boat in its path, narrowly missing the vessel.

Other boats can be seen rocking violently in the waves as the tornado kicks up huge amounts of spray before eventually dissipating near Preli.

Local reports said the waterspout passed in front of nearby Santa Margherita and approached a tour boat but did not cause any damage.

Elsewhere, flooding was reported in parts of Veneto and Friuli after a slow-moving thunderstorm dropped 100 to 200mm of rain on the coast overnight.

The region is under a yellow weather warning until Thursday evening.

Footage from Lignano showed heavy rain hitting the outdoor cafe’s seating area as cars drove along a flooded road.

It comes after two women died as brutal storms hit Italy, causing flash floods, landslides and tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorms hit northern and central regions, with more than 63,000 lightning strikes recorded in Tuscany in just 12 hours.

Rescue teams carried out more than 200 rescue operations and dozens of people were forced to flee their homes.

In Milan, the Lambro River overflowed its banks and water rushed through the city streets.

The policeman dived into the water and pulled her out of the car, but she could not be saved. He was taken to hospital with injuries sustained during the rescue.

A second elderly woman died after a tornado hit the Sinalunga area on Thursday.

She was reportedly closing the window when the glass broke and a piece of glass damaged a major vein in her leg.

Strong winds also tore off the roof of a sports hall in Sinalunga and toppled trees.

Local authorities said the area was “suffered by a particularly severe weather event”, adding that the roofs of homes and businesses were also damaged.

The storms caused further chaos across Italy, with the Tagliamento River bursting its banks and houses in several towns along its banks flooded.

In Venice, firefighters rushed to save a pregnant woman who was stuck in her car Thursday morning, amid about 140 calls for help received by the city’s fire department.

About 45 people were evacuated from their homes in Cataejo, near Sondrio, after heavy rain triggered a landslide.

The downpours also flooded part of the Civili hospital in Brescia, while firefighters in the eastern Marche region received more than 100 calls due to damaged buildings and fallen trees.

Emergency crews have been deployed across the country as extreme weather conditions continue to cause widespread unrest.
