Ambient minimalistic EP from members of Balmorhea and Deaf Center. Ojas Music, the new label from Devon Turnbull’s eponymous audio, hi-fi and design company, has released its first record in partnership with The Vinyl Factory: Unnaan ambient minimalist collaboration between Michael A. Mueller and Otto A. Totland. Müller, co-founder of the minimalist instrumental duo Balmorhea, has a long history of solo recordings and film scoring, released on Deutsche Grammophon and collaborating with artists such as Hania Rani, Alva Noto, Víkingur Ólafsson, The Album Leaf and Douglas McCombs of Tortoise. Totland is one half of Norwegian experimental/ambient duo Deaf Center, whose seminal releases on Type Records and Sonic Pieces helped shape a generation of minimalist and ambient music. His solo piano trilogy, produced by Nils Frahm, received widespread acclaim. Unna (Norwegian for “away”) functions as a double meaning: it indicates both the physical distance between the two artists and the inner pull of a state of creative flow when time recedes and attention deepens. The music combines Totland’s delicate, closely-micked piano with contributions from Müller on double bass, glockenspiel, mellotron and Rhodes as textural counterpoint. Turnbull’s public listening installation HiFi Dream Listening Room No. 1is a permanent feature of 180 Studios, offering an audiophile space where every element is carefully considered to create an environment that respects both the music and the listener.
