Former Premier League footballer Nathaniel Mendes-Lang, 34, was accused of beating his wife when he appeared in court

Former Premier League winger Nathaniel Mendes-Lang has appeared in court accused of beating his wife.

The 34-year-old footballer, who currently plays for MK Dons, was accused of assaulting his wife Cyra Mendes-Lang back in June at their home in Staffordshire.

He was arrested after police were called to a house in Shenstone and charged with assault by beating. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed the charges last month.

Mendez-Lang appeared at Cannock Magistrates’ Court on Friday and denied the charges.

Mendez-Laing and Saira, the mother of his child, have been married for just a year and tied the knot last summer.

He was seen entering court on crutches and confirmed his name, age and address without saying a word.

The court heard Mendez-Lang was accused of repeatedly hitting his wife in the head and damaging her hand in the alleged incident.

The quarrel between the couple began due to a “disagreement about the phone,” but the football player assures that the confrontation did not escalate into physical violence.

The case will go to trial in January next year and Judge Joseph O’Connor allowed Mendez-Lang to be granted conditional bail rather than remain in custody.

MK Dons said they could not comment on the ongoing matter and were struggling in League One this season.

Mendes-Lang played in the Premier League for Cardiff in the 2019/20 season and scored four goals in 20 games for the Welsh side.

He also ends up in Guatemala, to which he is entitled through his mother and maternal grandmother.

Mendes-Laing has not been seen on the pitch since the opening day of the League One campaign. He moved to MK Dons after spending three years at Derby, during which time he scored 19 goals in 131 games.
