Government urges airlines to respect passenger rights amid eruption closure

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Transport has called on commercial airlines to respect passenger rights and provide comprehensive services following the prolonged closure of airports caused by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatoa.

The ministry’s director-general of civil aviation, Lukman F. Laisa, stressed in Jakarta on Sunday that air carriers are legally required to provide support to stranded travelers in accordance with established aviation consumer protection regulations.

“Airlines are required to provide services and maintenance to affected passengers, including timely status updates and rebooking or refund options in accordance with applicable regulations,” Lukman said in a statement.

To prevent severe overcrowding at terminals, the ministry advised potential passengers not to travel to affected airports during the disruption period and to monitor official airline channels for schedule updates.

On Sunday, air travel provider AirNav Indonesia issued several notices to airmen (NOTAMs), extending the operational closure of key regional hubs due to the dangerous spread of volcanic ash:

• Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK): Closure extended until 17:30 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) based on (NOTAM A3346/26).
• Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP): closure extended until 18:00 WIB (NOTAM A3347/26).
• Radin Inten II Airport (TKG, Lampung): closure extended until 18:00 WIB (NOTAM B1125/26).
• Budijarto Airport (Curug): closure extended until 17:30 WIB (NOTAM C1079/26).
• Pondok Kabe Airport (Jakarta): Closed until 14:00 WIB (NOTAM C1080/26).
• Hussein Sastranegara Airport (Bandung): closed until 16:00 WIB (NOTAM C1086/26).

Lukman stressed that aviation security remains the top priority in all operational assessments.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation maintains ongoing real-time coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), airport operators as well as air navigation authorities to dynamically manage recovery as atmospheric conditions improve.
