Higher gas prices didn’t stop Labor Day travelers

JACKSON, Tenn. (WBBJ) – If you were on the highway any time between Thursday and Monday, you know you’re not alone. Labor Day travel came in waves, with many trying to navigate heavy holiday traffic.

“People have already started traveling on Thursday or Friday, and on those days they just come in droves, and then on Saturday and Sunday we celebrate,” one traveler said of the heavier traffic on Monday as people headed home.

Road trips have come at a cost this year as gas prices tend to rise. The average price of gasoline on Labor Day 2025 was about $3.19 per gallon, according to AAA. The average price for a gallon of gasoline this year is about $4.

However, travelers say paying extra is a small price to pay for the opportunity to celebrate the holiday with loved ones.

Kimberly Barham, a Labor Day traveler, said, “We usually stay home and enjoy the weekend.” She continued, “We’re seeing family, so it’s always nice to see family you haven’t seen in a while.”

These family trips will be tough on the wallet this year. AAA data shows domestic hotel bookings are up 9%, with plane tickets to popular destinations averaging nearly $800. High airline ticket prices are another reason why many travelers decide to take advantage of gas prices rather than fly to their destination.

AAA advises motorists still on the road to drive carefully, plan extra travel time and remain vigilant.
