Jakarta Airport extends flight suspension as Anak Krakatau ash disrupts air travel

Flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta have been further suspended until 18:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on 7 September 2026 as volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau continues to impact aviation operations, leading to widespread flight cancellations by Garuda Indonesia, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines.

The latest extension follows ongoing disruption from volcanic ash, with airlines canceling domestic and international flights and advising passengers to check their flight status before traveling to airports.

Garuda Indonesia has canceled all flights to and from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK), Bandung’s Husein Sastranegara Airport (BDO) and Lampung’s Radin Inten II Airport (TKG) due to temporary airport closures caused by volcanic ash.

The airline said flights scheduled after 6:00 pm WIB will resume gradually once the affected airports are declared operational. The resumption will depend on the development of the situation, instructions from the authorities, security requirements and operational readiness.

Garuda Indonesia

Garuda Indonesia’s list of affected services as of September 7 includes 80 domestic and 23 international flights, although the airline cautioned that this number could change depending on developments and operational adjustments.

The affected international network includes services connecting Jakarta to destinations such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Melbourne, Guangzhou, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Jeddah and Medina.

Domestic flights connecting Jakarta to destinations such as Bali, Surabaya, Medan, Yogyakarta, Balikpapan, Makassar, Semarang, Lombok, Palembang and several other Indonesian cities were also affected.

Garuda Indonesia advised passengers traveling to or from Jakarta, Bandung and Lampung to periodically check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Passengers whose flights are affected may request rescheduling or a full refund, subject to applicable conditions. Those who have booked tickets through travel agents or online booking platforms can also submit their queries through their original booking channel.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has canceled all its flights to and from Jakarta on September 7 as the volcanic eruption and ash continue to impact airport operations. One SIA flight on September 8 has also been cancelled.

The latest flight cancellations follow disruptions to the carrier’s Singapore-Jakarta flights on September 6 due to increased impacts from volcanic ash.

Passengers are advised to monitor their flight status for the latest information as operating conditions may change.

Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines has extended flight cancellations between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta until September 7 due to disruptions at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

On September 6, the carrier canceled 12 flights. As of September 7, the affected Malaysia Airlines flights included MH713, MH712, MH711, MH710, MH717, MH716, MH726, MH721, MH720, MH725, MH724, MH723, MH722, MH726D and MH727.

Malaysia Airlines said it continues to monitor the situation and will communicate further information directly to affected passengers.

Travelers are advised to update their contact details when booking so they can receive flight notifications via email and SMS.

As airport operations and airline schedules continue to change, passengers traveling to, from or through affected Indonesian airports have been advised to confirm their flight status with their airline before traveling to the airport.
