Learning trends among university students – Australian Science

Introduction

Studying in today’s world is a very different experience than learning in the past. With the advent of the Internet, information has become available faster and easier than ever. New trends in learning are developing, with technology being the main culprit. The purpose of this article is to analyze how different learning tendencies develop and what dispositions allow them to develop.

Teaching methods

Much attention has been devoted to researching new teaching methods and improving the effectiveness of well-known, carefully used existing teaching methods. Surprisingly, “tried and true” methods such as rereading, keywords, highlighting, and summarizing have proven to be very ineffective teaching methods. It was found that methods that engaged students the most, either by challenging them or using their own critical thinking abilities, were the best methods for fast, easy, and satisfying learning.
With the advancement of technology, a new and effective method of learning is quickly becoming widespread – online learning. Virtual classes and even entire virtual schools are becoming commonplace today, and this method has proven to be effective because it has a lot of flexibility and with the help of software, it can duplicate real world environments and situations at a fraction of the cost. 50% of students said they enjoyed the content learned in virtual classes, compared to 32% of students who said the same about traditional class methods.

Access to information

Access to information is now easier than ever before, thanks in large part to technological advances. The modern student has many more tools at his disposal than, for example, a student just 50 years ago. These tools provide fast, easy, cheap and reliable access to information in ways previously thought impossible. Quick access to information has significantly reduced the time required to acquire educational materials, and thereby significantly increased the effectiveness of learning. A quick search on the Internet has replaced reading dozens of books for information, and research shows that more and more students are relying on the Internet as their main source of information. As this study shows, students not only use online information for studying, but it is also their main source of information in everyday situations.

Technology and training

Technology has changed the way we perceive the world around us. Today, quick access to information and the ability to be connected have become a basic human right, and technology has paved the way for quick access to information. If previously students were limited in the use of books, notebooks, paper and other physical media, now all the necessary knowledge can be stored on their smartphone or computer. Various portable devices such as tablets and laptops allow students to carry the equivalent of thousands of books in their bags. This easy access to information is unprecedented and as such has made learning today faster than ever.

Class 1

Today, classrooms are equipped with smart boards, Wi-Fi and other utilities that make the learning process much easier, and the information presented is easier to understand and absorb. Students use their smartphones and smartwatches, such as so-called “cheat watches” specifically designed for studying, as a way to quickly check information or summarize a lecture they’ve taken, with many actually recording lectures and posting them online. A recent study found that a staggering 53% of students would like their schools to allow them to use mobile phones in school to improve their learning.

Conclusion

Technology is changing everything around us, and even something as basic as learning is adapting and evolving in ways previously thought impossible. New teaching methods make a positive difference by increasing the overall happiness and interest of students themselves, as well as making it easier for lecturers to present knowledge.
