Brisbane Lions premiership hero Zac Bailey has re-signed with the reigning premiership, ending a long-running saga over whether he would move to Adelaide.

In a side story from Saturday’s semi-final between the Lions and Crows at the Gabba, Bailey turned down a monster offer from Adelaide.

The restricted free agent signed a new eight-year contract that will keep him with the Lions through 2034.

A two-time Australian international, Bailey had another outstanding season, scoring 31 goals and averaging 21.7 goals.

The 26-year-old’s call comes as the Lions prepare to bid farewell to star veteran Lachie Neale, who is expected to move to Collingwood during the trade period.

Bailey’s signature comes just three days after the Lions unexpectedly demolished Sydney in the qualifying final at the SCG.

Marshall demands trade with Saints, Duursma wants to leave Roos

Meanwhile, Rowan Marshall is demanding a trade from St Kilda, a year after Geelong tried to lure the experienced sportsman.

Marshall is under contract with the Saints until the end of next season and his biggest suitors are the Cats and Essendon.

He tried to leave for Geelong at the end of last season but has yet to name his preferred new club.

Cats coach Chris Scott has remained tight-lipped about his club’s prospects of signing the 30-year-old.

“If I were [interested]I wouldn’t tell you,” Scott told reporters Tuesday.

“It’s an unfortunate situation. I think everyone would like us all to be a little more open, but I think it’s gotten to a stage now.” [where] communication must be carried out by the players themselves.

“I don’t think we should speak on their behalf, so it’s probably best to direct this question to him.”

Scott said the fact that Marshall remained under contract with the Saints complicates the situation.

Marshall has played 21 games this season for the Saints, who have selected former Carlton recruit Tom de Koning as their starting man.

St Kilda said it would consider its options ahead of the trading period, which opens on October 5.

“Marshall has not identified a preferred direction at this stage and the club has made it clear that any transaction must be in the best interests of St Kilda Football Club,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, fourth pick in the 2023 draft Zane Duursma has told North Melbourne he wants to move to Melbourne.

The Demons have long been linked with the 21-year-old, who made 38 appearances for the Kangaroos over three seasons.

Duursma has resisted signing a new three-year contract with the Roos, who sacked veteran coach Alastair Clarkson last week.

The Demons are understood to have separately told former captain Jack Viney that he could consider a trade after a difficult injury-plagued season.

Viney, 32, played just one game – in Melbourne’s final defeat to Carlton – after pre-season Achilles surgery and subsequent back and toe injuries.

Viney, a Premier League player in 2021, is under contract until the end of 2028.
