Fraser Island is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s the largest sand island on the planet and boasts stunning freshwater lakes, towering rainforests and an idyllic 75-mile beach. It’s no surprise that the island attracts around 380,000 tourists a year. Fraser Island is also an important cultural site for the local Buchulla people, who believe that ancestral spirits still roam the beautiful rainforest trees and sand dunes. The lakes have a special place and streams such as Wanggoolba and Ely are important sacred sites. But is this natural paradise and cultural shrine under threat? Many experts believe Fraser Island is increasingly under threat from climate change. We’ll look at how this phenomenon is affecting the island, from the changes we’re already seeing now to the potential impacts in the coming years. Sea level rise Fraser Island was part of the Australian mainland 10,000 years ago, but rising sea levels indicate that much of the island may disappear completely. It is likely that the popular Parallel Dunes ridges will be inundated and land less than 10 meters above sea level will be lost. Experts speaking at the sixth biennial Fraser Island conference estimated that rising sea levels would have an even greater impact on the island than on the Great Barrier Reef (though the state government insists there is no reliable data), an area widely known to be at great risk. “It’s the most erodible surface, it’s all sand, not rock or anything,” said John Sinclair, event organizer. The Great Sandy Channel can be expected to widen, leading to potentially dangerous changes in currents and tidal flows. In addition, coastal erosion will lead to changes in wind speed and an increase in the number of storms, which again is dangerous for both local residents and tourists. Warming and climate change Fraser Island is known to be an overlap zone in the region, allowing some species to thrive in cooler temperatures compared to areas further north. However, rising temperatures will lead to the extinction of species such as black butt and tallwood. Fish species like the Tailor may also decide to migrate to cooler areas. This will undoubtedly lead to a decrease in biodiversity in the region. Climate change on Fraser Island will not be limited to just rising average temperatures. This will also potentially lead to greater climate variability in the region. This could lead to an increase in frost events which, even if sporadic, would have a potentially catastrophic impact on the flora and fauna of the region. Wind patterns Climate change has already led to an undeniable increase in northerly winds, which has led to the neutralization of southeasterly winds in the region. Although it may seem trivial, this trend is leading to an increase in vegetation on the island’s famous sand dunes. Noam Levin, a scientist who has studied the region, has noted a significant decline in the number of dunes since the 1980s. In addition, algae growth negatively affects both fishing and swimming, spoiling the island’s previously pristine waters. Perhaps even more worrying is that the combination of rising temperatures and stronger winds will lead to an increase in the frequency of fires. Not only that, but we can also expect them to be more severe and dangerous to both people and local wildlife. Deterioration of the lake’s condition Dr Wade Hadwen (Fraser Island Defenders) stressed that the island’s lakes were gradually deteriorating. The reasons for this are twofold. First we have the aforementioned algae buildup that has led to poor water quality. However, the problem may also be related to anthropogenic pollution of roads located near lakes. Impact of tourism Almost four hundred thousand visitors come to Fraser Island every year. This number is only expected to grow. Environmental degradation has occurred not only due to climate change, but also due to the huge number of tourists. For example, water and soil quality have deteriorated, and the number of four-wheel drive vehicles has led to increased erosion. What can we do? The potential impact of climate change on Fraser Island makes for grim reading. But despite this, there is much we can do to preserve the natural beauty of this World Heritage Site. Monitoring, research, mitigation: As noted in the State’s commentary on impacts on the Great Barrier Reef, some data collection is still in its infancy. It is important that we continue to monitor the development of certain problems (such as sand dune erosion) to determine the severity of environmental changes. Adaptation and management: The number of tourists landing on Fraser Island is not necessarily a problem, but it is important that they are managed properly. Considering that the island’s main source of income is no longer sand mining and logging, progress has already been made. Tourism is more sustainable if the right measures are taken. Tourists should be taught how to interact with Fraser Island in an environmentally sensitive manner. For example, instead of planning individual trips, visitors could work closely with experienced travel agencies to ensure a responsible visit to the island. Additional information should also be provided on site so that both tourists and local residents are aware of the risks of human impacts. Small changes can also lead to big changes. For example, experts agree that runoff from sandy roads affects lakes. The roads need to be moved further. Although this adds inconvenience, it is a small price to pay.
