Scandic continues selective growth in Germany, partnering with real estate investors to reposition existing hotel assets in strong markets. In Freiburg, Scandic is working with pan-European real estate investment manager IREMIS, which has acquired the property from the current owner, with Scandic signing a long-term lease. The project adds a new destination, strengthens Scandic’s presence in Germany and demonstrates the company’s ability to generate profits through sustainability-focused refurbishment, operation and repositioning. The new hotel marks Scandic’s entry into Freiburg, an attractive university and business city in southwestern Germany close to France and Switzerland. Freiburg is among Germany’s leading hotel markets and is renowned for its attractiveness as a holiday destination, a strong demand base and a special profile in the areas of sustainability, research, healthcare and green urban development. The hotel has an excellent location directly opposite Freiburg’s main train station and next to the Konzerthaus, the city’s leading congress and events venue. It is also within walking distance of Freiburg’s historic Old Town, shops, restaurants and major cultural attractions. Scandic Freiburg is expected to become one of the city’s leading internationally branded conference hotels, serving a wide range of business, meeting and leisure guests. “This is an important step towards our further growth in Germany and a clear example of how Scandic can create value together with new real estate partners. Freiburg is a resilient and attractive city with high year-round demand, and the hotel’s location gives us an excellent platform to launch Scandic into a new German destination for both business and leisure travelers,” says Jens Mathiesen, President and CEO of Scandic Hotels Group. The hotel will be completely refurbished and modernized to Scandic standards. The repositioning includes a complete renovation of all guestrooms, updated restaurant and bar designs, upgraded meeting rooms, and updated health and fitness facilities. The hotel will have 219 rooms, approximately 480 square meters of flexible meeting space, a restaurant and bar, and parking. The project also reflects Scandic’s growing importance as a partner for property owners and investors in Europe. Through both new developments and the repositioning of existing hotel properties in attractive locations, Scandic can support long-term value creation while expanding its brand presence in selected markets. “We are open to business with partners who share our ambition to develop strong hotel assets in attractive destinations. This project shows how Scandic’s operating platform, brand strength and sustainability focus can help transform an existing hotel into a competitive, future-ready product,” says Jesper Engman, Chief Development Officer of Scandic Hotels Group. Sustainability will be an integral part of the hotel’s operations and its operations will be certified according to the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. Scandic is taking a resource-efficient approach to growth, focusing on energy efficiency, long-term environmental standards and reducing impacts across its operations. The renovation will also improve the guest experience with a room offering based on the Scandic Room Collection concept, combining design, comfort and functionality with circular thinking and the choice of more environmentally friendly materials. Scandic Freiburg is expected to open in autumn 2027 after renovations.
