United Airlines is testing a much easier way to eat before flying

There’s nothing more stressful than being at the airport, hearing boarding begins, and realizing you haven’t eaten yet. Are you running to the nearest restaurant? Are you at risk of missing your boarding group? Or just settle for an overpriced bag of chips from the store next to your gate?

United Airlines is testing an idea that could greatly ease this airport dilemma.

Your gate can become a delivery window

United is experimenting with a new service that allows eligible passengers to order food, drinks and even some essentials through the United app before boarding.

The best part? Instead of wandering around the terminal looking for your order, you can pick it up near your boarding gate.

The pilot project is currently operating at Newark Liberty International Airport in Terminal C, serving select flights and select gates.

So, in theory, your daily routine at the airport could look something like this:

Check your flight.
Get notified.
Order food.
Go to your gate.
Pick it up.

No crazy terminal crawling required.

And it’s not just sandwiches

The service is not limited to the usual selection of airport snacks.

Depending on what’s available, passengers can order items such as sandwiches, salads, drinks, baby food, chips and candy. But United is thinking beyond food, offering practical items such as charging cords, travel pillows and some over-the-counter medications.

And frankly, this is where this idea gets interesting.

Because forgetting about lunch is annoying.

Forgot your phone charger when you’re about to spend three hours on a plane?

Newark is just a trial run

United chose Newark as a pilot in part because it is a major hub where travelers may find themselves with very little time between flights.

The initial program includes up to nine designated gates in Terminal C, with United working with hospitality company OTG and participating restaurants to prepare and deliver orders.

The airline plans to bring the pilot to Houston later this year, where the experience could include more dining options and the ability to have food delivered right to the gate.

If travelers like it, United may eventually expand the service to other airports.
