Update on Scott McTominay’s health in response to Napoli’s announcement following heart surgery

Scott McTominay has gone under the knife after being diagnosed with a mild benign arrhythmia – an irregular heart rhythm – and Napoli have provided an update following the procedure.

Scott McTominay has undergone successful surgery to correct a minor heart problem, Napoli has confirmed. The former Manchester United star was recently diagnosed with mild benign arrhythmia, an irregular heart rhythm that is not considered serious but requires a procedure.

McTominay, 29, went under the knife in Manchester on Tuesday and Napoli say the operation was a “complete success”. The Serie A side added that their midfielder is expected to return to action after the upcoming international break.

“Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester on Tuesday morning,” Napoli said in a statement. “The operation was successful. McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training.”

The Scotland international also played down the seriousness of the problem, telling a recent awards ceremony: “I’m fine, I’ve been planning to do this procedure with the club for a long time.”

McTominay’s procedure forced him to miss Napoli’s 3-2 defeat to Inter Milan last Saturday. He will be unavailable for a further three of Napoli’s matches, including their Champions League opener at home to Arsenal on Wednesday.

Max Allegri hopes McTominay will be available when his side host Frosinone on October 10 in their first game back from the international break. Napoli have lost two of their opening three Serie A matches, leaving them 12th in the table and six points off the top.

Scotland will also have to cope without McTominay for the start of new manager Sebastian Pocognoli’s reign. After a disappointing exit from the World Cup, Scotland will look to bounce back in four Nations League matches between 26 September and 6 October.

McTominay’s long-term future at Naples has also been a topic of conversation this week. The contract runs until 2028, and there is uncertainty as to whether he will sign a new agreement.

Two years ago he signed for Napoli under Antonio Conte in a deal worth £25.7 million, winning the Italian title in his first season and being named Serie A player of the season. Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna spoke about the uncertainty surrounding the 29-year-old in an interview with DAZN.

“Scott said he doesn’t know if he’ll renew his contract at this point,” Manna explained. “He has a two-year contract, we want to do it and he wants to do it too. It’s not always easy to connect things, but we try.”

McTominay was sold to United in the summer of 2024 after spending more than two decades with the Red Devils. He made 255 appearances for the first team, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
