Sprint king Matthew Brennan claimed his fifth stage win of the Vuelta a España on Wednesday, topping the group sprint in Seville to win stage 17. The 21-year-old Grand Tour debutant crossed the finish line ahead of Jordi Meus and Magnus Cort Nielsen. Advertising General classification leader Enric Mas moved a step closer to his first Grand Tour victory, maintaining a 2m 6s lead over Felix Gall, with four-time Vuelta winner Primož Roglic a further four seconds behind. The stage was set for the group sprint finale, without a single climb, on the long, flat 185-kilometre route from Dos Hermanas to the Andalusian capital. Sinuhe Fernandez and Enzo Paleni formed a two-man lead early on, extending their lead to more than four minutes over a peloton that was moving leisurely on another hot day with temperatures above 30C. Advertising Around halfway through the race the gap had widened to over five minutes and Visma then worked hard to close it. Groupama FDJ-United rider Paleni dropped Fernandez but was swallowed up by the peloton with three kilometers to go after a huge effort. Young star Brennan beat Danish rider Korth to take victory in the sprint ahead of Belgian Meeus, who crossed the line in second. As with his other victories on stage, the Brit raised his hand up, this time with all fingers up, symbolizing his five victories. Advertising Brennan’s victory puts him in a small group of riders, including Tadej Pogacar, who was the overwhelming favorite to win this year’s Vuelta before he suffered a season-ending injury in a stage eight crash, to claim five or more stages in a single Grand Tour. On Thursday, riders will race a 32.1km individual time trial from El Puerto de Santa Maria to Jerez de la Frontera on stage 18, one of Mas’s last chances for the general classification to close the gap on the Spaniard.
