Alexis McAllister is ‘very sad’ he wasn’t offered a new contract at Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Alexis McAllister admits he could have left in the summer as he was “sad” the club had not offered him a new contract while other players were extending their contracts.

Fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have had their contracts extended, but Mac Allister said his agent was told the club were “not in a position” to offer him a contract.

Admittedly, the Argentine international hasn’t had his best season and doubts have been raised as to whether he still has the legs for the Premier League, but the same could be said for most of Arne Slot’s title holders, who have been desperately defending.

Mac Allister had been linked with a summer move, including to Wednesday’s Champions League opponents Atletico Madrid, but he has two years left on his current contract and wanted to stay as he believes the team can still be successful.

“There were options to leave this summer,” he said.

“I think, as everyone knows, I have received the news that the club cannot offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad.

“I think every day in training and games I give 100 percent for this football club. Of course, I can have very good and bad games, like everyone else, but I always give my best.”

“I see Dominic and Ryan extending their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time I’m a little sad that I didn’t get mine.

“Of course, there is still time, the fans have nothing to worry about because I will give 100 percent until the last day that I am here. Let’s see what happens.”

“But I think I am at the right club now and I have the right mindset to give my all to the club.”
