Manchester United’s problem solved after breach of Premier League rules forced them to change kit

Manchester United have fixed an issue that surfaced after the first Premier League match of the new season.

Manchester United broke competition rules regarding sponsors during the opening weekend of the Premier League season. However, the matter has now been resolved for the remainder of the campaign after the club confirmed a new multi-million pound deal.

Teams in England’s top division wear a sponsor’s logo on one arm and a competition badge and the slogan “No Place for Racism” on the other. According to Premier League rules, those who do not have a sponsor on their sleeve must wear the badge and lettering on both sleeves.

United broke these rules on the opening weekend of the season against Hull City, leaving one side empty, although they are not believed to have received any punishment for the breach. They rectified the situation in their first home match against Ipswich and will now not have to worry about this problem thanks to new sponsor SumUp.

Fintech firm SumUp replaces DXC Technology, whose £20m-a-season contract expired after the 2025/26 campaign. The deal is expected to be United’s biggest ever sponsorship deal, although the exact value has not been disclosed.

“We look forward to working closely with SumUp to bring them closer to our global fan base, help them tell their story on the global stage and support the next chapter of their impressive growth journey.”
