Table of contents

Last year we said the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones would still be surprisingly good by 2025 standards, but this year Sony has done us one better.

For the first time in the history of the WH-1000X line, Sony is updating an old pair of flagship headphones with a second generation: the Sony WH-1000XM4C headphones. Priced at $299.99, they’re an alternative to the current $450 XM6 flagships, while offering some upgrades from their older counterpart that will bring them to the 2026 market.

The budget proposals don’t end there. Sony also announced the WH-CH730N headphones, the latest generation of its mid-range line, which will cost $179.99, and the even more affordable WH-CH530, which sell for $69.99. Both headphones are available for purchase from September 7th. In addition to the standard version, Sony will also offer special limited edition Hello Kitty editions of these two headphones, as well as a Hello Kitty edition of the XM6 headphones.

In the early 2020s, the original Sony XM4 headphones appeared. That headphones on social networks. Sony noticed their popularity, especially among younger users, and decided to bring back the magic with the Sony WH-1000XM4C.

At $299.99, they’re cheaper than premium flagship options (which average $450) and even $60 less than Bose’s new mid-range option.

When it comes to noise cancellation, they feature the same QN1 processor and quad-microphone system as the first-gen headphones, so you can expect the same performance from them. However, Sony has upped the audio quality with a 10-band equalizer (up from the first generation’s five bands), an updated audio profile, and in-game equalizer settings. Like the originals, they also feature foldable earcups. They cut down on battery life a bit, offering 27 hours of playback versus the first generation’s 30 hours.

The headphones will go on sale this fall at Sony, Amazon and Best Buy.

The Sony WH-CH730N is more affordable at $179.99. While the noise cancellation and sound quality won’t be on the same level as Sony’s more expensive models, these headphones are still effective.

They offer 50 hours of battery life with active noise cancellation enabled, foldable ear pads for easy portability, custom EQ settings, and multipoint connectivity. Plus, at under $200, they represent a pretty solid value. Their predecessor, the WH-CH720N, was Mashable’s favorite pick for under $200.

The WH-CH730N is available from September 7 on Amazon and Sony in five color options: black, white, pink, blue and oatmeal.
