Alexis McAllister: The Liverpool midfielder is upset over the lack of a new contract and admits he could have left in the summer

Liverpool midfielder Alexis McAllister is “very sad” not to have been offered a new contract and admitted he had the “opportunity to leave” in the summer.

The 27-year-old confirmed he has two years remaining on his contract with the Reds, which he signed when he joined the club in the summer of 2023.

The Argentine international’s discontent comes after fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch signed new long-term contracts this year.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atlético Madrid, Mac Allister said in his pre-match press conference: “There was a chance [he could have left the club in the summer].

“As everyone knows, I have received news that the club cannot offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad.

“Everyone can see that I give 100 percent to this football club, every single day in training, in games. Of course, I can have very good and very bad games, just like everyone else. I always give my best.”

“And I see Dominic and Ryan renewing their contracts, which makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time I’m a little sad that I didn’t get mine.”

“Of course, there is still time. The fans don’t have to worry because I will give 100 percent until the last day I’m here.”

“We’ll see what happens. There were options to leave this summer and I think now I am at the right club and I have the mentality to give this club my 100 percent.”

When asked if negotiations were underway on a new contract, he replied: “Possibly. I don’t know. It will depend on how I perform this year. They are also right to make the decision, but hopefully they will change their mind.”

Asked if he was given a reason for turning down a new contract, he replied: “Not really. There was no direct conversation with me – it was my agent.”

“I don’t want to say something they never said, but I learned from my agent that they were not in a position to renew me.

“It’s very sad because we won the Premier League together, we went through some tough times together and I always try my best. We’ll see what happens, but of course I’m a little sad.”
