American Airlines permanently cancels first class tickets after November deadline

American Airlines (AA) is preparing to pull the plug on its tried-and-true premium first class offering and will permanently stop selling first class tickets in November 2026 and March 2027, respectively.

In a press release, AA said it was phasing out its Boeing 777-300ER first class and Airbus A321T first class aircraft in favor of newly reconfigured business class aircraft. While the move marks the end of an era for first class, AA is moving closer to premium travel with other offerings such as a flagship restaurant for business class passengers, as well as products focused on exclusivity, comfort and enhanced service.

American Airlines released new business class seats in 2022, which have since entered service. Traditional first class resulted from the 2015 merger of AA and US Airways.

However, how One mile at a time describes it, a first class AA product “incredibly mediocre” and is often filled with employees. Premium First Class is located above the Business Class cabin, not necessarily the Domestic Class cabin that AA currently markets as “First Class”.

Here’s the difference:

Premium First Class: On some long-haul or premium aircraft, AA has both business and first class. First class is a higher and more exclusive cabin.

Regular domestic “first class”: On many domestic flights in the US, AA calls the front cabin first class, but there is no separate business class cabin. This is essentially the airline’s highest standard cabin on these flights.

Once AA stops selling premium first class cabins, first class cabins on the remaining aircraft will be considered part of business class. Another situation would be when planes with first class cabins are reconfigured to eliminate first class seats.

This means that on planes that still have first class cabins, these seats will be considered part of business class. However, it remains unclear how these first class seats will be distributed among business class passengers.

While AA bids farewell to its premium product, the carrier is also shifting its focus to its business-class product, Flagship Suite. On September 2, AA unveiled its newly redesigned Boeing 777-300ER, which offers more business class and premium economy seats than any other U.S. airline.

“Our flagshipThe aircraft represents the next evolution of premium travel at American. The 777-300ER, with its elegant interior and spacious, premium seating, reflects our ongoing commitment to creating travel experiences based on what customers value most,” AA chief commercial officer Nat Pieper said in a statement.

AA describes its new flagship package as “sophisticated”, with a greater focus on the next generation business class experience. According to the AA, the newly redesigned aircraft boasts 70 seats in the flagship suite, equipped with doors for privacy, ample personal storage space and unique sun lounger seating.

The aircraft also features 44 redesigned premium economy seats with sculpted headrests, adjustable calf and leg rests and increased storage space, as well as 30 extra legroom seats in the secondary main cabin, offering passengers a luxurious travel experience including priority check-in.

American Airlines makes improvements to its flagship restaurant before first class flights

AA’s premier product is Flagship First Dining, where travelers can select competitive dining options in Flagship lounges. As AA promotes its new business class product, Flagship First Dining will be transformed into Flagship Dining, offering an a la carte menu for business class passengers.

AA also said that Flagship Dining is open to all Flagship customers, including the lower class, where they can enjoy a curated wine and spirits list and chef-prepared meals in the lounge.

“Once on board, the Flagship SuiteThe service offers an exceptional multi-course dinner paired with award-winning wines, premium American amenity kits and relaxing bedding including a mattress topper and a cool, reversible pillow,” AA said in a press release.

It also comes after AA added seven international routes and passengers received new benefits. TheTravel has reached out to American Airlines for comment.

AA’s decision to scrap first class marks a significant focus on premium travel, with more differentiated offerings designed to give passengers an enhanced experience without the traditional first-class product.

Starting November 19, travelers will no longer see first class sales on Boeing 777-300ER first class aircraft, and Airbus A321T first class flights will be reduced on March 28, 2027. The move could also give more passengers access to AA’s first-class business class as the airline increases the number of premium seats on its planes.

AA’s decision to move up from first class puts a greater emphasis on business class, and travelers who want America’s premium onboard experience will increasingly choose the flagship suite.

American Airlines’ first class will soon be a thing of the past, but the carrier’s focus on business class is filling that gap with more privacy, comfort and improved service.
