There is a unique magic in spontaneous journeys shared among close friends. In June, we packed
our bags and set off for Albania, a country that quickly revealed itself to be a stunning mosaic of
vibrant cities, ancient history, and untouched nature. Over the course of three unforgettable days, our itinerary wove together the vibrant pulse of Tirana with the coastal charm of Durrës—places where culture and a distinctive way of life do not go unnoticed—alongside the magic of Berat and hidden mountain canyons. It was the quintessential summer escape, marked by unexpected experiences and a deep connection with the local people.

Why I wanted to visit Albania

Albania is a captivating country located in the Balkan Peninsula of Southeastern Europe, bordered by Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Greece, and washed by the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. For a long time, it remained one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, which is precisely what drew us to it. Our journey began when we landed at Tirana International Airport, the country’s main aviation hub, which immediately placed us in the heart of the nation. While our three-day itinerary was focused primarily on the central and northern cultural and natural wonders, it is worth noting that we did not visit Southern Albania. The southern region, lying close to the Greek border, is world-renowned for the spectacular Albanian Riviera, featuring pristine Mediterranean beaches, turquoise waters in Ksamil and Sarandë, ancient archaeological sites like Butrint, and charming seaside villages. Knowing what that area offers only gives us the perfect excuse to plan a return trip in the future.

Tirana’s Vibrant Pulse and the Fantastic Architecture of Namazgja Mosque

Our Albanian adventure began in the nation’s capital, Tirana. The city immediately captures you
with its vibrant energy, a fascinating blend of colorful Ottoman, Italian, and communist-era
architecture transitioning rapidly into a modern, cosmopolitan hub. The streets were filled with
life, bustling open-air cafés, and an infectious optimism. The crown jewel of our urban
exploration was the magnificent Namazgja Mosque. Standing before this architectural
masterpiece, we were struck by its grand scale. We captured photographs of it, both bathed in the
dramatic glow of its nighttime illumination and from within its serene interior. Inside, the vast
dome, exquisite calligraphy, and soft lighting created an atmosphere that can only be described
as truly fantastic. It’s a breathtaking sanctuary of peace in the heart of a dynamic city.

Coastal Flavors in Durrës: Seafood Delights at New Pampas Restaurant

As the afternoon waned, we made our way to the coastal city of Durrës to settle into a secluded B&B right in the city center. After settling in, we headed out to experience the local culinary scene, which led us to the New Pampas Restaurant. This elegant yet welcoming venue set the bar incredibly high for our trip. I ordered the seafood linguine, and it was an absolute triumph. The pasta was perfectly al dente, tossed in a rich, deeply savory sauce that beautifully complemented an abundance of incredibly fresh,
locally caught seafood. Every bite felt like a celebration of the Adriatic Sea, and it earned an
overwhelmingly positive review from everyone at the table.

The Timeless Spirit of Berat: Exploring Castle Walls and Tasting Authentic Cuisine

On our second day, we journeyed inland to Berat, widely known as the “City of a Thousand Windows.” Walking into Berat feels like stepping directly into a living history book. The well-preserved Ottoman houses climb steeply up the hillsides, creating a stunning visual cascade of white facades and dark wooden windows.

We spent hours exploring the historic quarters of Mangalem and Gorica, capturing countless photographs of the ancient cobblestone streets, the majestic castle overlooking the valley, and the iconic Gorica Bridge spanning the Osum River. To truly immerse ourselves in the local culture, we sought out traditional neighborhood restaurants. These hidden culinary gems are the ideal places to authentically savor true traditional Albanian cuisine. We delighted in our visit to Eni Traditional Food Berat, where we were treated to local specialties prepared by local families—whose hospitality made the food even more extraordinary.

The Wild Beauty of Bogovë: A Scenic Trek to the Icy Mountain Waterfall

Seeking a break from the summer heat, we drove further into the mountains toward the remote
Bogovë Waterfall. The adventure began with the journey from the parking area to the falls. It
was a beautiful, deeply pleasant walk through lush green nature, guided by the soothing,
rhythmic sound of rushing water echoing through the trees. The trail wound through dense
foliage before finally revealing the spectacular waterfall, cascading into a crystal-clear, deep
emerald pool. The water was absolutely freezing, but the temptation was impossible to resist.
One of my favorite photographs from the entire trip captures me suspended mid-air, frozen in
time during a dramatic dive into the icy waters, providing an unforgettable rush of pure adrenaline.

The Golden Sunset on Durrës Promenade and Coastal Delights at Tivari Restaurant

The final day of our getaway allowed us to fully embrace the serene coastal rhythm of Albania by
strolling down the vibrant, sprawling waterfront promenade of Durrës. This lively stretch of the
city is alive with the chatter of locals, the aroma of roasted corn, and the gentle sound of the
Adriatic tide washing against the shore. We returned to the beach just as the sun was beginning
its spectacular descent. Standing on the warm sand and looking out toward the bustling port, I
captured a breathtaking photo of the sunset—the sky painting itself in deep, emotional shades of
gold, amber, and deep purple over the gentle, rolling waves.

Following this magical spectacle, our search for a final dinner led us to a hidden gem called
Tivari Restaurant. Located right on the water, this establishment offers an incredible,
uninterrupted panoramic view of the sea. Even though it doesn’t have many reviews
online yet, we decided to trust our instincts and step inside, and we were absolutely blown away
by the quality of the meal. I ordered the casarecce burrata, pesto & pomodorini. The combination
of the rich, creamy cheese with the vibrant, herbaceous freshness of the pesto and the sweet
burst of the cherry tomatoes was spectacular. But the absolute biggest surprise of the night was
the price. Prepare to be amazed: this high-quality, beautifully presented plate of artisanal pasta,
enjoyed with a prime sea view and the ocean breeze, cost a mere $8.50!

Looking back on these three days—brief yet incredibly intense—this trip proved to be a spectacular exploration of one of Europe’s most surprising destinations. Albania succeeded in shattering every preconception, revealing itself as a place where art, culture, landscapes, and gastronomy blend to create a nation where one can enjoy an exceptional stay without spending a fortune—a reality rich in human warmth, breathtaking scenery, and world-class culinary experiences that are accessible without draining one’s wallet.

From the modern, pulsating streets of Tirana and the serene interior of the Namazgja Mosque to the ancient cobblestone alleys of Berat, we traveled through centuries of history in a single weekend. The thrill of diving into the freezing waters of Bogovë Waterfall added the perfect dash of wild adventure, while the slow, sun-drenched evenings on the beaches of Durrës provided much-needed peace and spectacular sea-view dinners like the one at Tivari. This fantastic summer escape with close friends proved that you don’t need weeks of planning or a massive budget to experience true travel magic; sometimes, all it takes is a three-day weekend, a camera full of memories, and a beautiful country waiting to be discovered.
