Pakistan’s woes continue as SEVEN wickets stun visitors to England masterclass

Pakistan slumped to 100-7 at lunch on the opening day of the third Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday after another dramatic collapse during a dismal tour of England.

Pakistan, already trailing 2-0 in the three-match series, made four changes to the team that suffered a heavy 194-run defeat in the second Test at Lord’s after which head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed was sacked.

But they again had few answers for opener duo Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer before Josh Tang stepped in as England fast bowlers made the most of helpful overcast conditions after home captain Joe Root won the toss.

Pakistan were in desperate trouble at 26-4 in 10 overs, but Saud Shakeel, fresh from his 97 at Lord’s, held firm with an unbeaten 37 overs.

Robinson, who had been a thorn in Pakistan’s side throughout the series, made the first breakthrough with meager figures of 2-9 in eight overs, with Archer (2-18) and Tong (3-23) also impressing.

Pakistan’s latest slump began when recalled opener Saim Ayub lost weight to typical Robinson backer as the 32-year-old took his 100th Test wicket.

Express fast Archer then destroyed Azan Awais with a short ball that the opener could only send to the diving Tongue at mid-wicket.

Abdullah Shafiq sent Robinson to Gully and Pakistan, who had yet to reach 200 in any of their four previous innings in the series, were four wickets down when the experienced Shan Masood ran away with a tame attempt to get Archer out.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who had not made a Test century in nearly four years, was dismissed for just seven, winning cleanly thanks to a superb tongue delivery that came off the seam.

The tourists had now lost five wickets in 15 overs and were 64-6 when wicketkeeper Ghazi Ghori, one of three debutants in the team along with Mohammad Imran and Razaullah, fell to Tonga by four lbw.

And there was still time for Pakistan to lose their seventh wicket when Tang removed Imran for five with a brilliant stump-breaking yorker.

But Razaullah hit the last ball of the session from Tonga, over cover for four, to take the score to 100.
