Sali Hughes on beauty: the hero products that kept me cool through the long, hot summer of 2026

YesTypically at the end of the year I look back on my favorite foods from the last 12 months. But this summer has been so hot and sweaty that it requires its own set of tools and, as a result, its own list of exceptionally effective products that deserve rave praise.

The first one is Refi Skin base (£30), a sheer face shade that’s so thin and light it’s all I’ve been able to wear since July. It is suitable for all skin types, but is not at all suitable for those who hate any hint of shine. Although the texture is completely non-greasy, breathable and so comfortable that it is impossible to notice, it look unmistakably dewy, so avoid if you like a matte finish. Personally, I’m of the opinion that in this heat I might as well steer into a skid, but I’m admittedly at the age where a juicier look works for my skin. Either way, it’s really makeup feels it seems like absolutely nothing, and the lack of coverage can be compensated for with concealer where necessary. Maximum points from me (I wear shade 140H).

Moisturizer is another step I had to skip due to humidity. The heat has made using a thick face cream as appealing as running a 5K in the park, so I’ve switched to lighter liquids to quench my skin’s thirst. Newly launched in the UK, Prequel skincare range is consistently good, but… Half & Half Fluid Moisturizer (£28) was a real find. This ultra-light emulsion glides on like semi-skimmed milk, satisfies like double cream and does little to weigh down sweaty skin. Glycerin and ceramides maintain elasticity until bedtime and create a smooth, dense base for SPF and makeup. It’s the skin care equivalent of sleeping under a silk sheet instead of a 9-fabric duvet.

new Saint-Tropez Instant glow mousse (25 pounds) was never far from my reach. It’s a quick, easy and flawless way to give your bare legs a golden glow before your next soapy shower. Pat with a mitt and rinse only when ready. There is absolutely no fussy preparation required.

I rely heavily on bright, fresh, uplifting scents to keep me in a good mood. The summer 2026 perfume playlist that I keep repeating is Dedcool. Extra Milk (from £24) – terrible name but a very gentle, happy and wearable scent – and Penhaligon’s Moon (from £32), dewy roses, zesty citrus and airy forest greens. Like a cold compress for the senses.
