US restricts official travel to Mexican border city of Nogales, citing threat

The US has limited official activities and travel in Nogales, a Mexican border city, to essential travel only during daylight hours, citing unspecified threat information.

“We are warning U.S. citizens of this threat and change of position,” the U.S. mission to Mexico said in a statement.

US officials did not specify the nature of the threat. The mission urged citizens to exercise increased caution, be aware of their surroundings, seek shelter in the event of an incident, and follow instructions from Mexican law enforcement.

Nogales, located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, is widely known as a busy crossing point with a history of organized crime, smuggling and occasional violence. The state borders the US states of Arizona in the north and New Mexico in the northeast.

U.S. travel advisories classify Sonora as a Tier 3 area, meaning travelers should reconsider traveling to the region.
