Bangladesh Bank (BB) has increased the annual foreign currency travel entitlement for Bangladeshi citizens to US$18,000 from US$12,000 in a bid to ease real foreign exchange requirements associated with travel. In a circular today, the BB has allowed Authorized Dealers (ADs)—commercial banks that are allowed to carry out foreign exchange transactions—to issue foreign currency worth up to US$18,000 or its equivalent per calendar year to an adult Bangladeshi resident in the country for travel abroad. The decision has been taken to facilitate the real travel-related foreign exchange needs of Bangladeshi citizens and keeping in mind the growing international travel needs, the central bank said. The benefit amount for minors under 12 years of age will remain at 50 percent of the amount allowed for adults. The BB also maintained the existing restriction on the issuance of foreign currency in the form of dollar bills. Cash dollar payments will remain capped at $5,000 per person up to the applicable annual travel allowance. The move is expected to provide greater flexibility to Bangladeshi travelers to meet legitimate expenses associated with overseas travel, including tourism, family visits and other permitted purposes, a senior BB official said.
